WORKSHOPS, PANEL DISSCUSION, SHOWCASE DESCRIPTIONS BELOW
Vocal Warmups : We will start our day of singing off on the right foot (or voice!). This will be a group vocal activity led by professional jazz singer, Tom Weiser. Call and response, stretching, and guidance on care of those vocal chord instruments!
Participating in Jazz Jam Sessions : Singing in jazz jam sessions can be intimidating sometimes! In this session we will learn the most important things to know about calling tunes, counting them off and singing them well at jam sessions.
Panel Discussion : The panel discussion at the 2018 SongBird Fest was one of the most popular events of the day! This year we have invited three profession jazz performers of three different generations to answer your questions about working in the jazz industry and how the performance world changes as we grow in wisdom with age.
Beginnings and Endings of Your Songs : Create and communicate intros and endings to your arrangements/lead sheets that enhance and complete the songs in your repertoire.
Jazz Theory for Singers / Finding the Sweet Notes : Ninths, sharp 11ths, Thirteenths and more! Take the mystery out of these perplexing numbers, and learn to use these "sweet notes" in your vocal performance!
Master Class / Scat Singing with Rachel Caswell : Our featured vocalist & clinician for the 2019 SongBird Vocal Jazz Fest will offer a 2 hour class on singing, including scat! Rachel is a fabulous scat singer and her knowledge in all things jazz will be available for us to learn!
Showcase Rehearsal with Band : Our wonderful rhythm section (piano, bass, & drums) will be available to rehearse with the all day participants who wish to perform in the evening showcase. There will be a sign up list for designated time slots. Each singer may present two songs of their choice. Please bring 3 copies of each tune you plan to sing.
Vocalist Showcase : Our festival day will conclude with a showcase concert featuring the workshop attendees who wish to perform with our professional rhythm section. Each singer may present two songs for our live audience. This performance will be held at The Muse Performance Space and audience tickets can be purchased at www.museperformancespace.com. Snacks, beverages (including wine and beer) will be available for purchase at the Showcase Concert. All ages are welcome to attend as part of the audience.
